Pedestrian bridge over the Schleusengraben in Hamburg-Bergedorf

1st Hans Grassl Award

To win the 1st Hans Grassl Award, 21 civil engineering master’s students of the Technische Universität Braunschweig specialising in steel construction were given one month to design a structurally sound bridge over the Schleusengraben canal in Hamburg-Bergedorf. Aesthetic, urban planning and economic considerations were also to be taken into account.

In March, the jury judged the work of the six student teams.

First place went to Joaquin Caniza, Kay Franke, Marian Hartleb and Felix Ockelmann for their design of a cable-stayed bridge with inclined pylons resembling reeds.

Anne Hehemann, Daniela Marx, Konrad Ritter and David Willinghöfer won second place for their design of a two-span cable-stayed bridge.

Fabian Fengler, Jani Olsen and Judith Kuttig finished in third place with their design of a traditional suspension bridge.
