Design of the new Genthin pedestrian bridge

3rd Hans Grassl Award

To win the 3rd Hans Grassl Award, in the spring of 2015 the civil engineering master’s students of the Technische Universität Braunschweig specialising in steel construction were given one month to design the new Genthin pedestrian bridge. Structural, aesthetic, urban planning and economic considerations were to be taken into account.

According to the planning permission, the existing pedestrian bridge is to be replaced by a new bridge. The vertical and horizontal clearances of the bridge must allow double-stack container traffic on the Elbe–Havel canal and permit two vessels to safely pass each other underneath the bridge.

In March, the jury judged the work of the student teams.

First place went to Nicola Scholl, Ulrike von Morstein, Jonas Cramer, Peter Niebuhr, Ferdinand Petschik and Erwin Thiessen.

Natalia Bezus, Christina Bolte, Alex Hersch, Simone Roth, Annika Saeftel and Anika Wirsbitzki tied for second place with Christian Flack, Hendrik Brase, Georg Brachmann, Stephan Neuner and Justus Frenz.
