Replacement of the Hayns Park pedestrian bridge over the Alte Alster River in Hamburg

9th Hans Grassl Award

To win the 9th Hans Grassl Award, in the winter of 2020/2021 the civil engineering master’s students of the Technische Universität Braunschweig specialising in steel construction were given approximately eight weeks to design a new bridge to replace the Hayns Park pedestrian bridge over the Alte Alster river in Hamburg. Structural, aesthetic, urban planning and economic considerations were to be taken into account.

At the beginning of February, the jury judged the work of the student teams. As the coronavirus pandemic had prevented the award ceremony from being held in its usual form in 2020, we were very pleased that on 21 June 2021 Martin Grassl was able to hand out the awards in person.

First place went to Philipp Görig, Merle Hanker, Viola Lengyel and Till Weber.

Jiri Becker, Nils Borchers and Peter Hajek won second place.

Emelie Becker, David Diaz Silva and Robert Thiede finished in third place.

Congratulations to the award winners and runners-up and all the best for your studies!
