Inauguration of the Schnelsen noise protection tunnel

After five years of construction, Hamburg's Transport Senator Michael Westhagemann (independent) and the Parliamentary Secretary of State at the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Enak Ferlemann (CDU) inaugurated the noise protection tunnel in Hamburg-Schnelsen on Friday 6 December 2019.

The layout for traffic with three northbound and three southbound lanes will be finalised in early 2020. First of all, however, traffic re-routing systems have to be built in front of both tunnel portals. In the event of a malfunction in one tunnel tube, these are intended to automatically direct the traffic through the second tube. The Schnelsen roof is the first of three to be built in Hamburg. The roof in Stellingen should be finished by the end of 2020, and the one in Altona is scheduled for 2025.
