At the conference for bridge construction and road infrastructure held on 10 and 11 November 2022 in Düsseldorf, Guido Herbrand will present the design of the bridge over the Düsseldorf-Nordstern traffic junction, which is part of the first construction phase of the U81 city rail line.

The first construction phase of the U81 city rail line, which is currently under construction, will link Düsseldorf Airport to the urban public transport system.

The six-span semi-integral steel bridge with a total length of 441.18 m was conceived as a ‘breathing bridge’, where the superstructure is clamped into the two abutments and supported freely on the five intermediate columns. This type of structure has never been used in a rail bridge.
Furthermore, a sensor-based monitoring system will be installed during the construction of the bridge, which will allow the real-time measurement of important structural reactions such as deformations, strains, settlements and temperatures and their transmission to the owner of the structure.
