Progress of the demolition of Leverkusen Bridge
Insights on the bridge demolition and its challenges
The demolition of Leverkusen Bridge over the Rhine River is progressing rapidly. According to our project manager, Tamás Simon, the bridge has successfully been cut in half. The two bridge segments were separated at mid bridge and secured to prevent them from toppling over. The day before yesterday, the stress in the uppermost stay cables was removed by lowering their supports located at a height of 35–40 m above the bridge deck. The deck deformed as expected.
Currently, the strands of the cable bundle are being cut and removed individually. The next step will be the demolition of the deck to the following stay cable attachment point. Our biggest challenge: developing and analysing the simplest possible procedures and auxiliary assembly structures, in collaboration with SEH Engineering GmbH.
Our next milestone will be the removal of the individual stay cable strands.
