On 18 March 2024, the rehabilitation works on the Franz Josef Strauss Bridge over the Danube River in Passau, the so-called city of three rivers, started according to schedule. The challenge: the general rehabilitation of the steel arch bridge under traffic within just one year.    

By the end of October, the corrosion protection will have been renewed, and the bridge will have gained new bearings, expansion joints and drainage. The bridge deck sealing, pavement and paraments will also be replaced. As the structure is on one of the most important routes in and out of the city, the work will be carried out with as little disruption to traffic as possible.

GRASSL has been tasked with the general rehabilitation of the bridge for all work phases of the planning and structural designs.  We know this bridge well, having undertaken frequent structural inspections. We also carried out the structural assessment according to the assessment guidelines before the start of the rehabilitation. We will further be responsible for the site supervision.
