GRASSL company outing 2019

Site visit to the A1 Bridge over the Rhine River at Leverkusen

On 13 September 2019, staff from all GRASSL offices had the exciting opportunity to visit the site of the bridge on the A1 motorway over the Rhine River in Leverkusen. In lovely weather and lively mood, the GRASSL staff inspected the progress of the completed construction projects by courtesy of the North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) State Road Construction Company.

The GRASSL staff were conducted in groups of 50 over the extensive site by employees of the NRW State Road Construction Company. From the steel construction assembly site on the right bank of the Rhine River in the area of the secured former Dhünnaue landfill site, the route led over the existing bridge over the Rhine River into the construction area on the left bank of the Rhine River. From the existing bridge, it was possible to observe all construction phases of the work on the substructure for the first new bridge over the Rhine River (earthworks, production of sheet pile walls, deep foundation works, pile cap production, formwork and casting of the piers). Alongside the new approach spans, the production of the scaffolding and formwork could be seen. Underneath the finished bridge, the route led over the new A1 embankment and the KVB's tramway to the NRW State Road Construction Company's site office and information centre.

Prior to the site inspection, the sub-project managers presented the comprehensive planning services and construction measures of this large project to the GRASSL staff in the "Wacht am Rhein" restaurant in Leverkusen.

As the general planner, GRASSL has provided the engineering services for this major project on behalf of the NRW State Road Construction Company.
