Sustainable mobility in Franconia

Design of the bridge over the Regnitzgrund in Erlangen

"Three towns. One tramway. The StUB." The tram system for the metropolitan region, the Stadt-Umland-Bahn (StUB), will soon be the tramway linking the cities of Nuremberg, Erlangen and Herzogenaurach as a sustainable alternative to using the private car.

GRASSL engineers are now also involved in the planning for this sustainable mobility: a section of the 26 km long route crosses the sensitive Regnitzgrund in Erlangen. In order to achieve the "most environmentally sound, architecturally appealing and technically excellent design possible for the bridge", a design competition was announced. From among the proposals for a solution submitted, our design of a 1.5 km long bridge, prepared in collaboration with Firmhofer + Günther Architekten and Toponauten Landschaftsarchitektur, was awarded first place.
"With this bridge design, the authors have realised a sophisticated engineering construction with elegance and symbolism in a sensitive landscape. A bridge has been designed, which, while producing an effect of lightness, continuity and compatibility, at the same time adds an aesthetic element to the flood plain. It must be emphasised that absolutely no concession has to be made in the function required and crossing the Regnitzgrund will become an experience." was the verdict of the panel of judges.

We are delighted that we can now bring our design to life and thus make our contribution to mobility in Franconia.
