Tatenberg Bridge

Progress in the construction of the temporary bypass

Our Hamburg GRASSL team has been tasked with the design of the new Tatenberg Bridge. To maintain traffic in both directions during construction, a temporary bypass alongside the eastern side of the existing bridge will be built. Here is an overview of the progress to date on the auxiliary bridge, and the next steps.

Progress of the Tatenberg auxiliary bridge; 13 January 2025

The challenges:

  • The shoulders on which the temporary bypass has been built are unable to support heavy loads, which is why the sheet pile walls of the access ramps will be erected using a method where the piler is supported by the previously placed sheet piles
  • The drill used to construct the bored pile walls of the auxiliary bridge is also too heavy to be supported on the shoulders. Therefore, the previously built access ramp will be used as the working area
  • There are many old foundation elements on the site. The location of the new sheet pile walls therefore had to be planned carefully to avoid the previously detected foundation elements
  • The extremely limited space further requires precise construction logistics

Construction of the access ramps of the temporary bridge has been concluded. The sheet pile walls have been placed and the concrete bridge deck has been cast. Currently, work is stopped. During the storm flood season, it is not allowed to carry out construction on the dyke. The foundation elements of the temporary bypass are located on the dyke.

Next steps:

When the storm flood season ends in early April, construction will continue. The bored pile foundation of the auxiliary bridge will be constructed from the recently completed ramps. The auxiliary bridge will then be installed, the cables and pipes will be relocated and work on the temporary bypass can be concluded.

We would like to thank the LSBG (Hamburg state agency for roads, bridges and waters) and our partners for their support of this project.
