Temporary bypass becomes reality
Work starts on Tatenberg Bridge
Our design work for work phases 1–3 and 6 (determination of project requirements, preliminary design, detailed design and tender preparation) for the LSBG (Hamburg state agency for roads, bridges and waters) has been concluded. The building work has been awarded, and now construction of the temporary bypass of the Tatenberg Bridge can begin.

The bridge over the Dove-Elbe River needs replacing.
The Tatenberg Bridge carries the Tatenberger Weg over the Dove-Elbe River in the eastern part of the Tatenberg lock in Hamburg Bergedorf. Due to the risk of brittle failure and stress corrosion cracking in the prestressing tendons, the bridge needs to be replaced.
To ensure smooth traffic movement on the Tatenberger Weg during the replacement of the Tatenberg Bridge, a temporary bypass will be built east of the existing bridge.

The design challenges: strategies and solutions
The geometry and construction of the bypass are limited by a multitude of complex constraints, such as the existing foundation elements in the soil, limited space due to neighbouring dyke structures and the position inside the dyke.
The ramps of the bypass will therefore be founded on sheet pile walls. Presses will be used in their construction, which reduces vibrations. As it is not possible to drive on the dyke, the sheet pile walls will be erected using a method where the piler is supported by the previously placed sheet piles.
