New bridge over the Rhine River at Ubierring in Cologne
Our design of a new climate-positive bridge over the Rhine River at Ubierring in Cologne has won!
The city of Cologne is planning to build two new bridges over the Rhine River for cyclists and pedestrians – and it’s time for us to celebrate! Why? The winning design of the southern bridge was carried out by us together with Firmhofer + Günther Architekten, arbos landscape and Kocks Ingenieuren.

We designed the bridge linking Ubierring with Deutzer Hafen as a 625 m cable-stayed bridge with a slender A-shaped pylon. The steel superstructure extends from Ubierring over the Rhine River far into Poller Wiesen and, inspired by the neighbouring Severin Bridge, blends seamlessly into the landscape. The iconic structure will not only be the longest pedestrian and cyclist bridge in Germany but also set a new standard as the bridge with the longest span (265 m). The bridge will link Cologne city centre left of the river with Deutzer Hafen, currently one of Cologne’s biggest urban development projects. It thus not only connects the shores but also the people who will be able to use it safely and comfortably on foot or by bike and will find the seating islands ideal spots for a rest.
The building of the second bridge at Bastei was awarded to schlaich bergermann partner – congratulations!
Costing an estimated 92.6 million euros, the bridge over the Rhine River at Ubierring is an important project for Cologne’s urban development. The final decision about the execution of this project lies with the city council. In April, the next steps will be discussed. If the project is approved, work on the design will start in the second quarter of 2025, with a possible completion date of the preliminary design in early 2026.
We are looking forward to the next steps and to the further development of this project!
