Measure beats memorial

connecting people

Its reputation could not be worse – ailing, overloaded, contaminated. There is good reason to worry about the existing bridge on federal motorway A1 over the Rhine River at Leverkusen. Politicians call it a “memorial for the catastrophic state of German infrastructure”, truck drivers complain about the time and cost of diversions and residents are troubled about toxic contaminants. The negative circumstances were piling up. A new connection over the Rhine River was urgently needed. And planning permission for the new connection had to be obtained quickly.

paving the way

GRASSL was contracted as the general planner, who coordinates everything. The planning team had to deal with interdisciplinary requirements – traffic infrastructure, feasibility studies, subsoil, emission protection, hydraulics, aerodynamics, etc. – at record speed. And with the design. After only two years of planning, the planning permission application for the entire construction phase was submitted. Despite several lawsuits in the Federal Administrative Court, construction was officially permitted to start four years later.

creating construction culture

Twin bridges are an aesthetic challenge. To ensure that the symmetric structures form a visual unit, the A-pylons are slightly inclined to the inside, and their joint at the apex is also slanting. This creates a great view despite the many structural elements next to each other. The chosen structural system sets an example for economic material usage. The result is a transparent and slender bridge that matches the surrounding land- and cityscape.
