Description

Modernization of the U1 line continues to advance in the northeast of Hamburg. In Volksdorf, HOCHBAHN is replacing two existing bridges — the Lerchenberg underpass and the Ahrensburger Weg underpass — with new structures. These bridges date back to the early 20th century and have structural deficiencies that make their renewal necessary. The construction work is being carried out under special conditions: limited space and ongoing rail operations require precise coordination and engineering expertise. After securing the old abutments and improving the ground, the new abutments were built beneath the existing superstructures. The old bridges will later be dismantled, and the concrete structures completed. These measures are part of the major project “Brücken Volksdorf 2025,” through which HOCHBAHN is future-proofing the U1 line in the long term — while preserving the historical character of the Walddörferbahn.
