Microscopic views in a subway station
connecting people
Subway stations are transfer hubs. They connect people by means of tunnels. The new transport intersection at ‘science suburb’ Martinsried completes the so-called ‘brain train’ U6 line in Munich by connecting it to the research centres along the city’s outer subway lines.
paving the way
The ceiling appears like an amorphous image seen through a microscope. The look relies heavily on smooth fair-faced concrete. The structural implementation of the organic shapes requires sophisticated modelling approaches. Recesses and openings are placed in structurally suitable positions and avoided in highly stressed regions. The free-form shapes reflect the context of the location – high-level biotechnology research. Each cell has its own function, be it artificial lighting, daylight entry, improving indoor acoustics, electrical supply or smoke extraction venting from the station. Key message: the station only works as an organism.
creating construction culture
The organic–cellular design is not just a visual inspiration. The principle of maximum self-sustainability through simplicity is also reflected in the arrangement of the individual parts. Thanks to this design of the building shell, the construction is resistant to wear and tear and straightforward to operate. Even without containing a visual reference to the high-tech location Martinsried, the subway station is well worth a visit.
