Addition to the Römer Bridge

1st place in the ideas competition in Kinding

Firmhofer+Günther Architekten, Toponauten Landschaftsarchitektur and GRASSL won over the panel of judges in the ideas competition for the pedestrian bridge near the Römer Bridge with their filigree structural system and were awarded first place.

As part of the rehabilitation of the historic stone arch bridge on the Altmühl flood plain near Kinding, a pedestrian bridge over the Altmühl River will be built, which will link the old town with the Römer Bridge. The design task was to create an addition to the historic bridge as an attractive crossing over the Altmühl. The new footbridge will create easy access to the monument, facilitate crossing the Altmühl and establish a link to the supra-regional Altmühl Valley Panorama Trail hiking trail network.

The structure designed presents a delicate contrast to the stone arch bridge, thus linking the present and the past. The technical progress is obvious and represented as much by the materials as by the slender cross sections and the resource-saving construction. This light bridge can be integrated into its surroundings and provides a successful transition to the adjoining landscape conservation area, which will then be accessible free of barriers.

We are delighted that, together with our partners, we have designed a successful proposal for enhancing the leisure opportunities in the region.
